2004 Presidents Cup
Neither torrential rain nor hail could keep the 2nd Annual USPC President's Cup from taking place at Fair Hill International, Fair Hill, Maryland on Saturday October 16, 2004. The President's Cup competition is the post season event for senior games teams which placed in the top four at USPC Championships this past summer in Lexington, Kentucky. The President's Cup was donated to Pony Club by Mr. Jim Ligon, who is a past President of USPC, Inc., former USPC Games Chair, and a steadfast supporter of mounted games. This year the four senior qualifying teams from USPC Championships 2004 were all from the east, Capital Region- Red Bull (Jake Cone, Marian Herbick, Rachel Fortier, Elizabeth Shaffer, Amanda Van Tassel), Eastern Pennsylvania Region- Bond (Shelly Heckles, Danielle Huntsman, Alex Menghetti, Julianne Scanon, Laurel Hellhake), Maryland/Capital Regions-Bahama Mamas, (Samantha Welniak, Ann Scarborough, Sammy Stalter, Jessica Schenck, Shelli Cone), and Maryland Region-Wild Things, (Julia Hickok, Brett Calhoun, Stephanie Hickok, Alyssa Peterson, Katie Sunderland). The volunteer games crew diligently placed all of the equipment out the night before on the main "lake" arena. However, by Saturday morning the main arena had drained beautifully and the teams were anxious to begin. The teams made their grand entrance into the main arena before an enthusiastic crowd. By the end of the first session, all of the teams were closely placed with a 14 point spread separating the first and fourth place teams. The Wild Things were out in front with 49 points, Bahama Mamas close behind with 42 points, Red Bull only 6 behind the Mamas with 36 points and Bond right on the Bulls heels with 35 points. During the final session of twelve games, Bahama Mamas challenged the leader, Wild Things, but was not able to draw ahead. Red Bull and Bond were battling it out for 3rd place. After the final two races were run, Wild things had won the President's Cup with 94 pts, followed by Bahama Mamas(82), Red Bull (78) and Bond(68). On Sunday, the teams were presented their awards by Olympic Gold Medalist and former international games rider, David O'Connor. The teams then took an energetic victory lap around the stadium much to the pleasure of parents and fans! Thank-you to the President's Cup Officials, announcer-Anita Vassallo, Chief judge and judge- Rachel Atlee and Nancy Lindamood, TD- Janey Lawrence, Scorer- Sharon Brown, Starter- Jim Reed, Equipment Crew Chief- Mr. Ed, Equipment provider- Lyndle Schenck, HM- Diane Hickok, Lane and Line judges- Jackie Horn, Christine Reilly, Cindy Harrington, Donna McCready, and Perkieman pony clubbers. Thanks to all the volunteers who made this possible and for the enthusiastic welcome from Fair Hill International! Letter addressed to USPC from

Inaugural The beautiful facilities of Fair Hill, located in Elkton, Maryland, provided the backdrop for the Inaugural President's Cup Mounted Games Competition over the weekend of October 24-26, 2003. This marks the 15th year of the Fair Hill International, a CCI*** that also sponsored the prestigious PanAm 2003 Games. This event is one of the qualifying events for the United States Equestrian Team in preparation for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. The four teams invited to participate in the President's Cup Championship earned the right to participate at this year's United States Pony Club Eastern National Championships, which were held in Lexington, Virginia at the Virginia Horse Park in August of 2003. The top four finishing Senior Games Teams were invited to this first-ever President's Cup Challenge. A former Mounted Games player, a long-time Games enthusiast, former USPC Games Committee Chairman, who has also served as Coach, Cheerleader and Defender of Mounted Games (and also incidentally twice-past President of USPC), Mr. Jim Ligon proposed the President's Cup Challenge this past year to both USPC as well as the organizers of Fair Hill. The Challenge was modeled after the Prince Philip Cup, which features the top finishing Junior Teams from each year's Pony Club Championships, and is held at the Rolex Competition each year in April. Mr. Ligon donated the perpetual trophy which was be awarded at this Championship. Overall Organizer for this first-ever event was Nancy Lindamood, and Chief Judge was Cindy Harrington. Competing in this event meant a long-haul trailering effort by some teams, especially the Roadrunners, who came all the way from the Great Lakes Region, and the Hot Ice Team, coming from the Heartland and North Central Prairie Regions. Closer to Fair Hill were the American Beauties, hailing from Eastern Pennsylvania, and the Fast 'n Furious Team, the local favorites from Maryland and current reigning National Champions from this summer's Pony Club Championships. After arriving at the site, the teams stabling was provided in a nearby park only a few miles from Fair Hill itself. Although there was no formal Horse Management judging (as is normally the case at Pony Club rallies and Championships), separate awards were also given out for the Best Turn-out, as well as the Best-Turned-out Stables. The head-to-head competition began on Saturday morning, Oct 25th, with a set of eight games, and continued that same afternoon with eight more games. It concluded on Sunday morning, Oct 26th, with a final set of six games. Scoring was done according to the USPC Games Handbook, with five points being awarded for a first place finish four for 2nd, etc. Disqualifications and Eliminations, as determined by the overall judges, were given no points. Competing in the event were the following teams and their coaches (players are listed with their Pony Club ratings and their pony's name): Hot Ice

On Sunday afternoon following the completion of the competition, the four teams reassembled in their formal attire at the main arena at Fair Hill. Competitors for the Pony Club President's Cup Competition escorted the Pan Am Teams into the main arena for their final Show Jumping competition of the event. Team Argentina was led by representatives of the American Beauties and the Fast n Furious teams. Team Bermuda was led by other members of the American Beauties team. The Brazilian Team was led by the Fast n Furious Team. Team Canada was escorted by the Hot Ice Team. The Mexican Team was presented to the crowd also by the American Beauties Team, and finally Team USA was led in by the Roadrunners Games team.
The presentation of the PanAm teams to the assembled crowds at Fair Hill was done against the backdrop of the bowl of the main arena and the large Patrons tent overlooking it. The show jumping standards were set in place, and a 2004 Lexus SUV was gracing the corner of the arena (Lexus was a major sponsor of this year's Fair Hill Event). Several thousand spectators were present, the side bleachers were filled to capacity. The hill sides of the arena held the many hundreds who could not be seated on the bleachers. As trumpet fanfares announced their arrivals, each team, preceded by their own Pony Club contingent holding their nation's flag, paraded into the arena. After all of the International competitors were presented, they retired to the adjacent warmup arena to prepare for their final competition, and the Pony Club competitors were then announced to the assembled onlookers and were awarded their final awards.
The "Best Turn-out" Award was given to the American Beauties team, and the "Best Turned-out Stable" Award was then given to the Roadrunners team. Finally, the team placings were announced, and the first-ever presentation of the President's Cup occurred, to the delight and loud applause of the crowd. Originally, the presentations were to have been made by David O'Conner, a Pony Club graduate and former Mounted Games player and present Games enthusiast. Unfortunately, Mr. O'Conner was to have made these presentations himself, but was injured while riding the cross country portion of one of his entries, suffering a broken ankle and wrist. While the awards ceremony was going on, David was in surgery having his ankle repaired.
With David O'Connor injured, his own Mounted Games mentor from the time when he was a Pony Club member (and avid Games enthusiast) was tapped to complete the presentation of the President's Cup: Mr. Jim Ligon. Jim was David's Games coach, and David often spoke warmly about the foundation that Mounted Games gave him in his journey to become one of the world's elite eventers. In that Jim Ligon was also the impetus behind the birth of the President's Cup Competition at Fair Hill, it seemed only natural that he should be in the arena in David's place making the presentations to the winning team.
After the ribbons for 1st through 4th place were given, and the awards for Best Turn-out (the American Beauties) and Best-Turned-out Stables (the Roadrunners) were announced, the four teams did a victory gallop around the main arena at Fair Hill, with the victorious Hot Ice team holding the new President's Cup Trophy aloft to the delight and boisterous applause of the capacity crowd.
Thanks are extended to all of the volunteers and parents; this event was a great success and we all look forward to improving it next year at Fair Hill.
