New International Games Schedule Announced

Sue Smith, Chair of the International Exchanges Committee of USPC, announced the upcoming venues for the International Games Exchange at this year's Annual Meeting of the USPC in Portland, Oregon. USPC is involved in six different international exchanges. Three of these occur on a regular rotation and schedule, and include Games, Inter-Pacific Exchange (Eventing and Show Jumping) and Tetrathlon. The others occur on a more sporadic basis, and are invitational; they include Foxhunting, Quiz and Polocrosse.

The next four International Games Exchange venues have been chosen by the four participating countries involved. The Exchange, which has gone on for almost four decades, is now embarking upon a new era in which it will only occur every-other-year (as is presently done by the Interpacific Exchange and Tetrathlon). 2007 marks the last of the annual Exchanges; the next one will be in 2009.

Canada is celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Canadian Pony Club in 2009, and will host the Exchange that year as a part of her celebrations. After Canada, Australia will host in 2011, Great Britain in 2013 and the United States in 2015.

The 2007 Exchange will be hosted by the United States, and the competition portion of the Exchange will occur on the evening of July 27, 2007. This follows the conclusion of the USPC Championships earlier the same day. Games competitors in the Championships will be allowed to offer their ponies to be used in the Exchange competition, and will serve as grooms. A souvenir of their pony's participation will be given to each pony which is chosen.

Because of the change to a two-year cycle, the next tryouts for the International Team in the United States will occur in the fall of 2008. To be eligible to try out for the team, candidates must be recommended by their RS and DC, be a C-2 at the time of their application, and be between 13 and 15 years of age as of January 1, 2009. Five team members, as well as a first alternate and a second alternate will be chosen at the time of the tryouts. This website will contain any additional news regarding applications for the tryouts for the team.

The International Exchanges Committee is a part of Activities, and falls under the oversight of the Vice President of Activities for USPC. Also in 2007, a new International Exchanges Handbook has been formalized. This Handbook contains the basic guidelines for proper organization and administration of an Exchange.

How Hard Was That Fall?

--Website link provides answer

Lorien Stables of Alachua County, Florida (in North Central Florida) has used basic Physics to provide a method for calculating the force of a fall from a horse. Galadriel Billington, owner of the Lorien Stables (named after the Lord of the Rings forest) used constant acceleration principles to provide an answer for the question of "How hard did I fall?"
